The back story

About Festivals in St Lucia: Jazz & Arts, Carnival, Jounen Kwéyòl and the Festival of Lights

Saint Lucia’s festivals are made by its people: flower societies that rehearse for months, mas bands that bring Carnival to the streets, communities that cook and dress for Creole Day. Joining in brings you close to island life.

Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival

Every spring the long-running jazz festival brings international headliners and Caribbean artists together, from big open-air evening concerts to smaller sets, with Pigeon Island among the venues. Alongside it, “Art and the City” turns Castries into an open-air gallery for local artists. The 2027 festival is scheduled for 30 April to 9 May. If the festival is your reason to travel, book early.

Lucian Carnival

Carnival builds all July with band launches, fetes, soca and calypso competitions and the National Carnival Queen pageant, and peaks on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, when masqueraders in feathers, beads and colour take to the streets. You can join a mas band and play in costume, or find a spot on the route. In 2026 the season ran from 1 to 22 July; check the 2027 dates when they are announced.

If your trip falls between festivals, the Gros Islet street party is on every Friday.

Summer: Mercury Fest and La Rose

Mercury Fest returned in 2026 after six years, filling an August weekend with beach parties, a poker run by boat, live music at Pigeon Island and a seafood village. The La Rose flower society celebrates its feast day at the end of August with a church service, a procession of its costumed royal court, and music on violin, banjo, cuatro, shak-shak and drums, ending with quadrille and belair dances.

October: Creole Heritage Month and Jounen Kwéyòl

October is Creole Heritage Month, with Kwéyòl lectures, a dawn heritage walk, the Creole Queen pageant, a traditional games festival and music nights across the island. The rival flower society, La Marguerite, holds its feast day in October too. The month culminates in Jounen Kwéyòl, Creole Day: in 2026 it falls on 25 October, with celebrations at La Clery Playing Field, La Caye in Dennery South and the Vieux Fort Recreational Park. Expect madras dress, Creole food and music; the tourism authority calls it one of the most authentic cultural experiences on the island.

December: the ARC and the Festival of Lights

Every December the yachts of the ARC, the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, finish their crossing from Gran Canaria at Rodney Bay Marina. For 2026 the fleet leaves Las Palmas on 22 November, and the rally office opens in Rodney Bay on 10 December; check worldcruising.com for the finish and prize-giving dates. On 13 December, the eve of National Day, Castries holds its Festival of Lights: handmade lanterns parade through the streets, the lights come on in Derek Walcott Square and fireworks go up over the city. The festival honours Saint Lucy, the island’s namesake.

Cricket

The Saint Lucia Kings play their Caribbean Premier League games at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground near Gros Islet, and the floodlit evening matches have a party atmosphere. Check Cricket West Indies and the CPL for fixtures.
