Before You Go: St Lucia Essentials
The practical things worth knowing before you arrive, so you can spend your time on the beach and in the hills.
Updated October 2026
Arriving
Air passengers are encouraged to complete the electronic immigration form before arrival, up to three days ahead; one form covers a family, and you receive a QR code by email. Many visitors from the US, Canada, the UK and several European countries need no visa for short stays, but check the rules for your nationality. The air departure tax is included in your ticket; leaving by sea, you pay EC$33 (aged 12 and over).
Money
The currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD, written EC$), and US dollars are widely accepted. Most hotels, restaurants and attractions take major cards and ATMs are widespread, but carry some cash for markets, minibuses and street food. Tipping is appreciated, though some places add a service charge.
Electricity
Sockets are British-style Type G, at 240 volts, so visitors from North America will need an adapter and possibly a converter.
Getting around
Licensed taxis have light-blue TX plates; agree the fare before you go, or use the Allez rideshare app. Minibuses, with green M plates, cost EC$2.50 to EC$8.00. To drive you need a temporary licence from the airport, the Castries police station or a car-hire office. Drive on the left, and allow time on narrow, winding roads.
Weather and seasons
St Lucia is warm all year, with temperatures typically between 24°C and 31°C, and brief tropical showers can come at any time, especially in the interior. December to May is the drier season, best for hiking and the calmest seas. The hurricane season runs from June to November; if you travel then, take insurance that covers storms and watch the forecasts.
Health and emergencies
In an emergency call 911 for an ambulance, the fire service or the police. Owen King EU Hospital near Castries is the main public hospital, St Jude serves the south, and Tapion is a private hospital; some private facilities ask for payment up front, so take travel insurance that covers treatment and evacuation. Use insect repellent, as mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue can occur, especially after heavy rain.
Language
English is the official language, and you will also hear Saint Lucian Creole, Kwéyòl, which is celebrated every October during Creole Heritage Month and on Jounen Kwéyòl.
