About Vieux Fort and the south: the back story
The south is the island’s quieter, more local side. Vieux Fort, developed as a military base in the Second World War, is now home to Hewanorra International Airport; Anse des Sables and Sandy Beach bring the kitesurfers; the protected Maria Islands lie just offshore; and the Moule à Chique lighthouse looks over it all. West along the coast, Laborie and Choiseul are traditional fishing villages, with Balenbouche’s old sugar estate between them.
