About Derek Walcott Square
Derek Walcott won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992; he was born in Castries, on 23 January 1930. The square that bears his name is surrounded by historic buildings, with a huge samaan tree giving shade and the cathedral on one side; on the eve of National Day it is where the lights are switched on.
