About Castries and Morne Fortune: the back story

Castries is the island’s cultural and commercial heart. The market, established in 1891, is busiest on Saturday mornings; Derek Walcott Square, named after the Nobel poet, is shaded by a great samaan tree beside one of the Caribbean’s largest churches; Pointe Seraphine combines the cruise berth with duty-free shopping; and Morne Fortune, above the harbour, keeps the remains of Fort Charlotte and some of the best views on the island.
